Week 9: May 13 - 17

Final Project:
1. Choose a climate, ecosystem, biome, etc...

  • Boreal forest, rainforest, desert, grassland/savanna, tundra, deciduous forest, mountains and ice, aquatic (saltwater), freshwater, or a new climate resulting from climate change/global warming.
2. Design an animal:

  • You will need to combine 2+ animals together to create a new species. Since you have designed a new species will need a new scientific name.
  • Description of your new species: predators, prey, hunting techniques, other food sources, niche, physical traits/appearance, adaptations, predator strategies, defense strategies, number of young, shelter, ecosystem, interactions with other organisms (symbiosis, competition, predation, etc.), life span, where on the world they can be found, etc. 
  • Explain how your new species is able to prevent extinction by adapting to the changing environment, global warming, potential for rising ocean waters, temperature increase/decrease, habit destruction, urban sprawl, etc.
3. Project Presentation:

  • You will be presenting your new species to class on May 21-22. For your presentation you will need:
    • A script of what you will be saying to the class about your animal
    • A drawing of your animal, highlighting its main features/characteristics.

Interactions Illustration Directions (25 pts):
DUE @ in class on Friday, April 5th!
   • Write the name of the animal on the top of your paper.
   • Make sure your name is also written somewhere on your paper.
   • Draw a neat, colored picture of your animal in its ecosystem. 
   • Include labeled pictures of its predators, prey and food source(s). (10 pts) 
Also include the following information on your drawing:
   • Describe the animal’s niche (2 pts)
   • List any predators the animal may have (2 pts)
   •  Food Source: (3 pts)
      •  List any prey that the animal may eat
      • List other things the animal may eat (requirement if the animal is a herbivore/vegetarian)
   • Describe the ecosystem the animal lives in (3 pts)
   • Describe a symbiotic (mutualism, commensalism, parasitism) or a competitive relationship. (3 pts)
   • List any special adaptations or features the animal has to help it survive in its environment. (2 pts)

Post Cards from a fast trip! 5pts/each (4 total = 20 pts)

·        Each postcard should contain:
o       A neat, colorful picture on the postcard (2 pts)
